Augmented reality
Showing a digital object in the real world through a camera, at real size and in the right place.
Augmented reality, AR, places a digital object into a live camera view so that it appears to sit in the real room. For a shop, the object is a product and the room is the customer's, which turns the question "will it fit and suit" into something the customer can check in seconds.
AR is different from virtual reality, which replaces the room with a digital one and needs a headset. AR uses the phone the shopper already has. It is also different from a 3D viewer, which shows the product on a page; AR shows the same product on the floor.
In e-commerce the value of AR is concentrated in products bought on size and fit: furniture, lighting, rugs, wall art, outdoor equipment and, on the face rather than the floor, eyewear.
