WebAR

Augmented reality that runs from a web page in the phone's browser, with nothing to install.

WebAR is AR delivered through a normal web page. The shopper taps a button on a product page and the product appears in their room, at real size, through the phone camera. No app store, no download, which is why it is used and app-based AR mostly is not.

On iPhone and iPad it works through AR Quick Look, a feature built into iOS that opens a USDZ file. On Android it works through Scene Viewer, which opens a GLB file. A product page serves the right file to the right phone, and the shopper never sees the difference.

The current limits are also worth knowing: placement on outdoor ground and glass can be unreliable, several items in one scene is still hard, and desktop browsers cannot do it at all, so a QR code hands the model to a phone instead.
