3D rendering
Producing images or clips from a 3D model, in place of or alongside photography.
Rendering is the process of computing an image from a 3D scene: the model, its materials, lights, a camera and often a room. The output is a still or a video that can be indistinguishable from a photograph, and can be produced for every colourway and every angle without a studio.
For a retailer with a 3D model already built for the product page, renders are close to free: the model exists, so the catalogue image, the lifestyle scene and the social clip come from it. The economics against a photo shoot depend on how many variants the product has and how often the range changes.
Rendering is different from real-time 3D. A render is computed once, slowly, for quality. A viewer draws the model live, many times a second, on the shopper's device.
