Level of detail
Serving a lighter version of a model when it is small on screen or far away, and the full one when it matters.
Level of detail, LOD, is the practice of keeping several versions of a model at different polygon counts and showing the one the situation needs. A product thumbnail in a category grid can use a tiny model; the product page viewer uses the full one; an AR scene may sit in between.
On the web it is mostly used to make first load fast: a light version appears at once and the detailed one replaces it when it has downloaded. Done well the shopper never notices the swap.
It is an optimisation technique, not something a retailer configures; a good pipeline decides it per product.
